Badges Without Borders, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization,  was founded in 2002 after having assessed the need for a program that would give public safety officials the necessary resources to handle situations where language acts a barrier. 

With a rapidly growing Hispanic population, many challenges lay ahead for the public safety sector. As Police and Fire Departments respond to  calls for help, they often find that many are unable to speak English, limiting the ability to provide crucial information at a time when every second counts.
